چکیده

The impression gained from the literature published to date is that the spectrum of the stadium billiard can be adequately described, semiclassically, by the Gutzwiller periodic orbit trace formula together with a modified treatment of the marginally stable family of bouncing ball orbits. I show that this belief is erroneous. The Gutzwiller trace formula is not applicable for the phase space dynamics near the bouncing ball orbits. Unstable periodic orbits close to the marginally stable family in phase space cannot be treated as isolated stationary phase points when approximating the trace of the Green function. Semiclassical contributions to the trace show an h̄ – dependent transition from hard chaos to integrable behavior for trajectories approaching the bouncing ball orbits. A whole region in phase space surrounding the marginal stable family acts, semiclassically, like a stable island with boundaries being explicitly h̄–dependent. The localized bouncing ball states found in the billiard derive from this semiclassically stable island. The bouncing ball orbits themselves, however, do not contribute to individual eigenvalues in the spectrum. An EBK–like quantization of the regular bouncing ball eigenstates in the stadium can be derived. The stadium billiard is thus an ideal model for studying the influence of almost regular dynamics near marginally stable boundaries on quantum mechanics. This behavior is generically found at the border of classically stable islands in systems with a mixed phase space structure. PACS numbers: 05.45, 03.65.Sq

Scar functions in the Bunimovich Stadium billiard

In the context of the semiclassical theory of short periodic orbits, scar functions play a crucial role. These wavefunctions live in the neighbourhood of the trajectories, resembling the hyperbolic structure of the phase space in their immediate vicinity. This property makes them extremely suitable for investigating chaotic eigenfunctions. On the other hand, for all practical purposes reduction...

Numerical study of scars in a chaotic billiard

We study numerically the scaling properties of scars in stadium billiard. Using the semiclassical criterion, we have searched systematically the scars of the same type through a very wide range, from ground state to as high as the 1 millionth state. We have analyzed the integrated probability density along the periodic orbit. The numerical results confirm that the average intensity of certain t...

Boundary integral method applied in chaotic quantum billiards

The boundary integral method (BIM) is a formulation of Helmholtz equation in the form of an integral equation suitable for numerical discretization to solve the quantum billiard. This paper is an extensive numerical survey of BIM in a variety of quantum billiards, integrable (circle, rectangle), KAM systems (Robnik billiard) and fully chaotic (ergodic, such as stadium, Sinai billiard and cardio...

Mathematical Billiards and their Applications 21st - 24th of June 2010 List of Abstracts

We perform the first long-time exploration of the classical dynamics of a driven billiard with a four dimensional phase space. With increasing velocity of the ensemble we observe an evolution from a large chaotic sea with stickiness due to regular islands to thin chaotic channels with diffusive motion leading to Fermi acceleration. As a surprising consequence, we encounter a crossover, which is...

Chaotic time-dependent billiards

A billiard in the form of a stadium with periodically perturbed boundary is considered. Two types of such billiards are studied: stadium with strong chaotic properties and a near-rectangle billiard. Phase portraits of such billiards are investigated. In the phase plane areas corresponding to decrease and increase of the velocity of billiard particles are found. Average velocities of the particl...
